Property & Evidence
The Property and Evidence Division is responsible for accepting, cataloging, maintaining and protecting all evidentiary items along with returning property to the legal owner and legally disposing of property entering the custody of the Police Department.
Evidence will be released upon the court disposition and only with permission from the investigating detective.
Types of Property:
- Found Property - is held for 90 days with a reasonable effort being made to find the identity of the legal owner, before it is sent to auction or legally disposed.
- Prisoner Property - is held for 60 days from the time of arrest before it is sent to auction or legally disposed.

Firearm Release Information
Firearm releases will be conducted after the investigating detective has a disposition and approves of the release and the firearm has been returned from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Crime Lab.
The legal owner must obtain and complete a Law Enforcement Gun Release Application from the Department of Justice Bureau of Firearms and proof of ownership has been established by documentation.

Police Auctions Online
The Hawthorne Police Department has formed an alliance with an internet auction site to dispose of goods that are no longer required to be held in the agency's Property/Evidence room. Items from the Property/Evidence room's inventory, including; jewelry, audio and video equipment, computer equipment and bicycles are available for bids at Ken Porter Auctions.
